International Volunteers

International Volunteer Information

lowernine.org Welcomes International Volunteers!

Recently we’ve had an influx of international volunteers. While we find this exciting, we want to make sure that your time with us down here in the Lower Ninth Ward is productive for both you and for us.

We here at lowernine.org need you to know a few things before you plan to come to Louisiana and volunteer with us.

1

English language competency – You must be at an intermediate conversational, as well as intermediate listening English level to volunteer with Lower Nine. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to learn the names of tools or construction terms as well as you will need to learn these on the work site.

Upon arrival, you will have a quick orientation and be given a handout that you must read and sign. This handout will help you in your first couple of weeks here in Louisiana and will help you adjust to staying and/or living in the USA, as well as working with lowernine.org.

We highly recommend that you purchase a mobile phone within 24 hours of arrival at lowernine.org. Cost of phones is anywhere from $35 – $50 US dollars, which does not include an international calling card if needed.
