before you apply

  • Read the volunteer handbook
  • Decide on the dates you will volunteer!
  • Deecide whether our housing is right for you
  • Be prepared to pay 25% deposit to confirm spot
  • We work Tuesday – Saturday from 8:15 – 4:30. Volunteer orientations are on Tuesday. Partial work days are not allowed, and a minimum of 2 days of work is strongly encouraged.
  • Anyone volunteering with us as part of a group must attend an orientation on Tuesday morning 8:15am – 9am. We expect that members of the group are consistent day to day – if they are not, it is effectively a different group each day. This means we would re-train volunteers each day, which reduces the efficiency and quality of our work.
  • Groups of students 14 – 18 years old must have 1 chaperone on site for every 5 students in the group. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
  • lowernine.org cannot provide transportation for groups of more than 5 people during our work day. We find it is most convenient for us and for group leaders to rent cars with room for everyone in the group. Chartering a bus or large vehicle is fine, so long as the vehicle can transport the group after the Monday morning orientation at our office. Groups have also successfully used Lyft and Uber in recent years, though this lends a bit less flexibility than car rentals.
  • Each individual in the group will eventually need to register on Omprakash in order to complete waiver and logistics information, and training.
