The name of this non-profit organization, lowernine.org, refers to the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, a predominately black neighborhood that was devastated during Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches of 2005. Yes, the work is STILL ongoing! Laura Paul is the organization’s tireless director, and as such sees to it that lowernine.org remains dedicated to training both residents of the area and volunteers in the numerous skills necessary to bring this century-old historic neighborhood back to life. These skills run the gamut from basic to advanced house construction and rebuilding, but also include community gardening projects, emotional and social support services, social outreach and community development.
