lowernine.org offers driving tours for individuals and small groups. Led by our team members and long-term volunteers, these guided tours provide an in-depth look at the history and ongoing recovery of the Lower 9th Ward – from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina to the everyday work of rebuilding homes, lives, and community.
Our tour is offered in exchange for a contribution to the organization, and all proceeds go directly to rebuilding homes in the Lower 9th Ward. If you’re interested in schedule a tour, please fill out our Google form.
what you’ll see
Your tour will include stops at:
- the Mississippi River levee and the Industrial Canal flood wall
- the site of the 2005 levee breach
- Make It Right houses and other architectural responses to disaster
- one of our active or recent rebuild sites
- Lower 9th Ward landmarks and local stores
we’ll talk about
- the neighborhood’s rich history and culture
- the systemic challenges that shaped its recovery
- our work and what it means to come back home after disaster

Touring the Lower 9th Ward with lowernine.org is not a tourist experience – it’s a chance to understand the realities of disaster recovery, racial justice, and neighborhood resilience.
But you don’t have to take our word for it – take our past visitors’ word for it.
The things she taught us were anywhere from terrifying, to astonishing, to heartwarming. She is so hardworking, humble, simple, well-versed, well-informed, passionate like no one else I’ve ever met. She took us to all the four corners of the lower 9th ward, to George’s house, and we even stopped in at her own house. She explained exactly how the water entered the area, how people lived before this flood and how the area was, how houses are built in the area, the current challenges overall, the progress and successes, the work being done in the community, how she ended up doing what she’s doing, what the organization is doing and how, how volunteering with them works… I cannot speak highly enough about this experience.
