#durandbuild: complete

Ms. Durand moved to the Lower 9th Ward as a child and has lived in the neighborhood for 61 years. She bought her house in 1990 and rebuilt/repaired the home in the same spot on Royal Street after Hurricane Katrina.


lowernine.org completed the roof and drywall repairs to Ms. Durand’s home in 2025. lowernine.org initially responded to leak in the roof that was causing water damage inside the house. During volunteers’ repair of the roof, it was discovered that after Hurricane Katrina contractors had not fixed the damaged roof, and instead put a whole new roof on top of a faulty one. Our work has involved removing shingles, replacing rotten wood, laying paper and stapling new shingles. After finishing the roof, volunteers removed and replaced the damaged drywall in her kitchen and bathroom.
