foundations for the future: building on the past
2020 has brought its challenges, but lowernine.org and the Lower Ninth Ward have always seen challenges as opportunities. When reflecting on the 15th anniversary of Hurricaine Katrina this year, we ackowledged that this work cannot halt: we must continue to bring justice and security to our community. We will continue to rebuild the neighborhood we know residents of the Lower Ninth Ward deserve, and to champion the Black homeownership, as we have done since 2006.
To date, lowernine.org has fully rebuilt 89 houses and completed additional renovations on over 300 more. However, many more families are waiting for help to rebuild and return home.
we are launching our most ambitious and impactful fundraising campaign to date, and we want you to join us. our goal is to raise $500,000 so we can redouble our efforts in support of the lower ninth ward.
Population return in the Lower Ninth today is still only about 40% of its pre-Katrina level, lagging far behind the rest of the City of New Orleans: funds raised through this campaign will go toward mitigating housing costs for families returning home, including construction materials and labor, closing costs on new properties for home buyers, and design assistance for new builds.
In addition, funds will partially support lowernine.org’s new headquarters, which will serve as a foundational base for our community development work. In addition to offices, the space will provide flexible housing for volunteers working on local builds, and serve as an information center for residents, as well as having a conference space for community use.
COVID-19 has also found lowernine.org expanding our progammatic impact to provide food security for Lower Ninth Ward residents, because we know how important it is to not only have a roof over your head, but also food on the table. For more on that work, please visit our social media, or call 504.278.1240 for information.
